Dr. Motte ist ohne Zweifel ein Akteur in der elektronischen Musikszene, der den Titel einer Legende am meisten verdient. Das Herz des in Berlin geborenen DJs, Produzenten und Pioniers schlägt spürbar an der Schnittstelle von Musik, Aktivismus und friedvoller Gemeinschaft. Seit vierzig Jahren prägt er nicht nur den Sound und die Ästhetik, sondern auch den Spirit der Techno-Szene.
Die „Love Parade“, die Dr. Motte 1989 als kleine nonverbale Tanzdemo mit ein paar Ravern gründete, entwickelte sich schnell zum größten Techno-Event der Weltgeschichte. Ihren Höhepunkt erreichte die Parade 1999 mit unglaublichen 1,5 Millionen Menschen, die friedlich durch die Straßen Berlins tanzten.
Aber für Dr. Motte ging es nie nur darum, einen unvergesslichen Rave zu veranstalten. Er wollte einen besonderen Ort schaffen, an dem Menschen aus allen Schichten ihr wahres Ich zeigen und sich mit etwas Größerem verbunden fühlen können. Genau diese Vision treibt ihn auch heute noch an.
2019 rief er „Rave The Planet“ ins Leben, eine neue Parade in Berlin mit einem klaren Ziel: zu zeigen, dass Techno Kultur ist und als solche gesehen und geschützt werden muss. Mit seiner gemeinnützigen Arbeit hat er maßgeblich dazu beigetragen, dass die Berliner Techno-Szene von der Deutschen UNESCO-Kommission als immaterielles Kulturerbe anerkannt wurde. Ein immenser Schritt, um die Wurzeln und die Bedeutung der elektronischen Musik zu bewahren.
Ganz in seinem Element, hinter den Decks, kreiert Dr. Motte unvergessliche Momente. Seine DJ-Sets haben den Ruf, unvorhersehbar, energiegeladen und vor allem fesselnd zu sein und die Zuhörer auf eine intensive Reise durch das Techno-Universum zu katapultieren. Ob er in einem Underground-Club, auf einem großen Festival, bei einer Parade mit Hunderttausenden von Ravern oder bei einem Boiler Room-Stream auflegt, seine Sets fühlen sich an wie kosmische Übertragungen aus einer anderen Welt: intensiv, beflügelnd und mitreißend.
Als Mensch und als Künstler zeichnet sich Dr. Motte dadurch aus, dass er seinen ursprünglichen Werten treu bleibt. Dr. Motte is without a doubt the individual in the electronic music scene who most deserves the title of legend. Standing at the nexus of music, activism, and community, the Berlin-born DJ, producer, and cultural trailblazer has been impacting not only sound but also spirit for forty years.
The “Love Parade,” which Dr. Motte founded in 1989 as a small non-verbal dance protest with a few ravers, swiftly expanded into the biggest dance music event in history. It peaked in 1999 with an incredible 1.5 million people dancing peacefully through the streets of Berlin.
But for Dr. Motte, it was never just about throwing a rave. He wanted to build a place where people from all backgrounds could unite show their true selves, and feel connected to something greater. This vision still pushes him forward today.
In 2019, he kicked off “Rave The Planet”, a new parade with a clear goal: to show that techno is culture and should be seen and protected as such. Through his non-profit work, he played a key role in getting Berlin’s techno scene listed as intangible cultural heritage by the German UNESCO Commission. This marked a big step to preserve the roots and importance of electronic music.
When Dr. Motte steps behind the decks, he leaves a lasting impression. His DJ sets have a reputation for being unpredictable, energetic and captivating, taking listeners on an intense trip through the techno universe. Whether he plays in an underground club, at a big festival, at a parade with hundreds of thousands of ravers or on a Boiler Room stream, his sets feel like transmissions from another world: raw, uplifting and immersive.
Dr. Motte stands out because he stays true to his original values. Even after many years in the business, he continues to fight for fairness, unity and creative freedom, both on and off the dancefloor. In 2025, he celebrates 40 years not just as a DJ, but as a cultural icon: a peace activist pumping beats and rhythms into a vision for a better world. Or at the very least, to create moments of collective euphoria, where people come together to dance, to rave and to feel pure bliss.

HISTORY

Up until 1989 Matthias Roeingh a.k.a. Dr. Motte led a relatively low-key life. Born in Spandau in 1960 he tiptoed through the scene – from 1981 to 1984 with his band ‘Toten Piloten’ (dead pilots), a Berlin Funk band. In 1985, in search of new musical experiences, the autodidact swapped drums and sticks for vinyls and turntables. In his then club, Turbine Rosenheim, he developed his specific style of mixing at an early stage, for which he drew from a wide repertoire of Jazz, Punk, Funk, Soul, Disco and EBM. Like no other, back then he managed to fuse all these genres. At Turbine Rosenheim just two years later, he organized the first Acid House parties in Berlin.

Dr. Motte is a co-founder of cult label Space Teddy Recordings and in 1992 – for the first time under the name of Dr. Mottes Euphorhythm – he released his first album Chill Out Planet Earth. In the same year another record was released on Tresor Records, that brought the international breakthrough for Berlin Techno and is still considered one of the most important records of the time: 3Phase feat. Dr. Motte – Der Klang der Familie. This successful cooperation was followed by many more, including Robert Babicz, Gabriel Le Mar, Tom Wax, Westbam, Namito, 3 Phase, Johnny Klimek, Paul Browse, Marc Van Linden, DJ Dag and many others.

LOVEPARADE

In 1989, before Dr. Motte was successful with his music productions and remixes, he realised an idea that should open a new chapter in music history: A demonstration to represent contemporary culture of electronic dance music called the Love Parade. Techno culture became the most important youth movement of the 90s, the Loveparade its unofficial public holiday. Within ten years, the number of participants rose from 150 to fabulous 1.5 million ravers dancing peacefully on the Straße des 17. Juni. Despite the overwhelming, also commercial success of the parade, Dr. Motte remained true to his clear, musical line and its original spirit. Following the sale of the Love Parade brand in November 2005 and right after the parade in the following summer, he distanced himself publicly for idealistic reasons and those concerning its content.
